NordFo is supposed to work for cooperation between the Nordic countries’ teaching educations to initiate, stimulate and report research and R & D within the subject craft and design (eng. Sloyd), needlework and woodwork, and the teacher education in these subjects. The subject Sloyd means education and training in the Nordic countries termed e.g. as slöjd, sløjd, sløyd, kasityø, håndarbejde, textilslöjd, trä- och metallslöjd, teknisk slöjd, smiði, forming, kunst og håndverk, hantverk og design, duodji/samesløyd, craft and design, at all levels of education and equivalent on college and university level. NordFos’ interest embraces institutions and individuals in the Nordic countries working with research and/or teacher training in the field of sloyd, including questions concerning the development of courses, teaching methods, didactics and pedagogy.
The school subject sloyd exist in all the Nordic countries but with different emphasis on the content. As a mobility student or teacher the subject can be studied and compared with curriculum from the native country.
Participants who have joined NordFos’ mobility program from late 1990 until today have had good experiences and made good personal and professional contacts. This is experiences which students and teachers can benefit from in the further study, and also as a practitioner. New didactic perspectives, the role of sloyd teacher, process and product orientation, entrepreneurship, school architecture, equipment for the making processes, fundamental pedagogical ideas e.g. is some of what the student or teacher can concentrate on.
The activities should reflect subjects in sloyd (aesthetic subjects) as they are expressed in Denmark, Estonia, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Latvia, Lapland (Sàpmi), Norway, and Sweden.
Nordfo encourages Sloyd – teacher students to use his or hers international semester to apply mobility to study in another Nordic country. It is given support for shorter grant period to observe practice and study another country's education system. NordFo has a big demand for mobility stipends for teachers primarily of one week duration. The network prioritizes the mobility stipends to purposeful places and happenings so that the returns will be as big as possible for the institutions, the individual person and for the network. NordFo wants to stimulate teachers to combine mobility with supplementary education.
